From the moment BMW decided to place the M badge on its 5-Series sedan back in the mid-1980s, the M5 immediately created its own niche in the executive saloon segment. In fact, it become so popular that many the Bavarian firm's rivals followed its example in the years that came after the original M5's launch.
Perhaps one of the more surprising challengers was GM's Cadillac CTS-V, the first generation of which was presented in 2004 before it was replaced by the current model in 2008.
