Citroën to Further Differentiate DS Lineup with the Formation of a Dedicated Styling Division

The decision to create a separate premium lineup under the DS moniker back in 2009 has proved a successful move for Citroën.

In order to maintain the momentum of the series, which currently comprises the DS3 supermini, DS4 compact hatch and the mid-size DS5, as well as to help an expansion in China, the French brand has decided to create a dedicated styling department for the DS range with the aim of differentiating its products from the more mundane C-range models.

Citroën Releases Official Photos of Golf R-Rivaling DS4 Racing Concept with 256-Horses

Less than 24 hours after bringing you the first pictures of the DS4R that were leaked onto the web on Thursday, Citroën released official images of the concept model that will be make its world premiere at the 82nd Geneva Motor Show in early March.

As reported, the DS4 Racing Concept is powered by a tuned version of the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine found in many of the PSA Peugeot-Citreon group models and which was developed in conjunction with the BMW Group.

In the DS4 R concept, it puts out a whopping 256 HP – that's 160 HP per liter, which Citroen says is a record for a mass-production car. At the same time, despite its high output, CO2 emissions are just 155 g/km.

Like the DS3 R that kicked off the French firm's “Racing” performance line, the DS4R study makes its presence felt with a ground effects kit that includes tweaked bumpers with large air intakes on the front, carbon fiber trim on the grille, a diffuser at the rear, wheel-arch extensions and side sills.

We don't know much officially about the Citroën DS4 R, whereas "R" stands for Racing, so we're not entirely sure if it's a showcar or the final production model, though the carbon fiber decoration on the front grille suggests it's the former.

Say bonjour to Citroën's latest creation and the second member of its DS lineup of special models after the DS3, the all-new DS4 that was revealed online today ahead of its public premiere at next month's Paris Motor Show.

Based off the freshly revealed C4 hatchback (Citroën's rival to the VW Golf), the DS4 is the production version of the French carmaker's Geneva Salon DS High Rider concept car. The key difference between the two models is that, whereas the design study featured a three-door body style, the DS4 gets five-doors with hidden rear handles.

Citroën describes the DS4 as "a unique and attractive blend of creativity, dynamism, exclusivity and versatility", which in reality translates to a potpourri of design influences from numerous cars and segments ranging from the coupe-esque roofline and hidden rear door handles, to the almost crossover-like road clearance.

Geneva Show: Citroen's DS High Rider Study in the Flesh

While the Survolt sports car concept is definitely the most impressive vehicle at Citroen's Geneva Show booth, the big news for the French firm is the DS High Rider study, a thinly veiled version of the forthcoming DS4 crossover expected to be launched in early 2011.
