Mitsubishi Lancer EVO Racer Flips Over During Romanian Rally

Romanian rally car driver Daniel Onoriu found himself in a bad situation when his Mitsubishi Lancer EVO flipped over into a ditch during a hill climb in Teliu, Romania, this past weekend.

The accident could have been worse though as Onoriu's car narrowly missed hitting what looks like a Volkswagen Golf that had exited the road earlier. According to our tipster, both Onoriu and his co-pilot suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

MT Puts New VW Golf R and Mitsubishi Lancer EVO Head to Head

In its latest episode of 'Head 2 Head', MotorTrend magazine took the recently launched in the U.S. Volkswagen Golf R hot hatch and compared it against the latest generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO.

While the two cars share many similarities including, but not limited to, their compact sized bodies that are motivated by 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines driving all-four wheels, they also prove to be very different on the road and the track.

Before you check out the video after the break, we'd like to remind you that the Volkswagen Golf R has 256hp and is priced from $33,900, while the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO gets 291-horses with prices starting from $34,495.

Watch a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO hit Black Ice and Almost Crash in West Virginia Pile Up [NSFW]

The first major snowfall of the season brought along bad news for some 30 drivers that were involved a multi-car pileup along the West Virginia Turnpike on Monday.

One of the luckier and perhaps more skilled drivers in a modded Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VIII captured some of the accidents on his dashboard camera when his car stepped on black ice and almost lost complete control of the AWD model - at which point, he repeatedly makes use the "F" word, hence the NSFW warning.

Mitsubishi President Confirms Next Lancer Evo with Hybrid Powertrain, May be Combined with a…Diesel!

Perhaps the Maya were right and the world will come to an end in December 2012. In which case we’ll never get the chance to see what a Lancer Evolution hybrid-diesel looks like in 2015.

But let's take it from the beginning. The hybrid part of the story is not just another one of those crazy rumors that pop up on the net. In fact, it is as official as it gets since it comes from the mouth of Mitsubishi president, Osamu Masuko.

Masuko revealed to British magazine Autocar that the next generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo will ditch the regular 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, which has become a mainstay of the 10 previous versions, in favor of a hybrid powertrain.

VIDEO: The Ultimate Taxi Ride in a Rally-Spec Mitsubishi Lancer EVO

In a perfect world for gear-heads, a sweet taxi ride would involve a high performance sports car, preferably a racing model, and a qualified driver. Unfortunately, the WRC-like Mitsubishi Lancer EVO taxi seen in the video after the jump exists only in fantasy, as this clip is a commercial for a new 4G mobile broadband plan from Norwegian cell phone operator Netcom. Click past the jump to watch the ad.

VIDEO: The Stig Goes Donuts in a Lancer EVO 9-Based London Taxi Cab at the Top Gear Festival

We don’t know the identity of the man hiding behind the white racing helmet at the ‘Top Gear Festival 2011’, but The Stig sure knows how to work the steering wheel. Of course, being that the black London Taxi Cab you see in the video after the jump is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, does help a bit. You see, what looks on the outside like a normal black London taxi cab, is in fact a re-skinned Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 9 crafted by the folks over at SHP Engineering.

The company started with a Lancer EVO 9 with just 1,500 miles on the odo and stripped it down to the bare bones. The body shell of a London Taxi Cab was then dropped on top creating the most innocent EVO we have ever seen to date. Follow the jump to watch it in some awe-inspiring donut action.

Mitsubishi Releases No-Frills Lancer 1.5 Juro Special Edition for the UK

The Mitsubishi Lancer nobody really wants but almost everyone gets across the pond has become a bit more desirable in the UK with the launch of a new special edition, which as usual translates to additional equipment at a more competitive price. The new edition is called Juro and is based on the Lancer 1.5 GS2 hatchback, which is powered by a 1.5-liter petrol engine gasping out 107-horses and 143Nm or 105 lb-ft of peak torque.

Mitsubishi to Phase Out Most of its U.S.-made Models by 2014

Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko today announced that the automaker will kill most of its current lineup of U.S.-made vehicles by 2014, as part of the company's “Jump 2013” mid-term business plan. The decision affects the Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder sports cars, Endeavor crossover and Galant sedan, which are going to be replaced with global vehicles built at the manufacturer’s Illinois plant. The Outlander crossover, Outlander Sport small crossover and Lancer sedan will provide the underpinnings for the new models.

FAIL: 2 Fast, 2 Furious Lancer Evo VII Breaks Free Of Dyno In Puerto Rico [Video]

Dynamometers, or dynos for short, are a useful tool in any racer’s arsenal. By applying some basic physical principles, a dyno can calculate the amount of horsepower and torque being transferred from the wheels to the track, without ever needing to leave the safety of the garage.

So here’s the scoop (according to the posters): some students at Mech-Tech College in Ponce, Puerto Rico were putting a Lancer Evolution VII through its paces on the school’s dyno, when disaster struck. Everything seems normal until 16 seconds in, when the Lancer careens to the left and slides off. Of course, it was all captured on video for our edification.

New Proton Inspira: The Malaysian Lancer Officially Launched

Proton has officially unveiled its Mitsubishi Lancer-derived Inspira mid-sizer, after its soft launch to the public and media in late October. Since then Proton has received over 1,800 bookings from customers around Malaysia in anticipation of its market launch this month.

The new model is the result of an OEM collaboration (the word "rebadge" sounds nastier...) between PROTON and Mitsubishi Japan, the latter providing the mechanical and design basis and the former tweaking the model for the Malaysian market.

Among those changes are the signature Proton grille and -according to the Malaysian company- the incorporation of Lotus DNA in the Inspira's ride and handling.

Proton Rebadges Mitsubishi Lancer and Calls it Inspira. Too bad it isn't an EVO..

Proton, Malaysia's national carmaker and owners of Lotus, has taken the wraps of its latest model. No, you aren't looking at a cheesy Photoshop and this isn't an April Fools joke come six months late: this is the firm's new mid-sized Inspira sedan.

For those of you fooled by the *cough* deceptive *cough* restyling Proton has done, the Inspira (from the Bahasa Malaysia word 'Inspirasi' which means 'Inspiration') is based on the current generation Mitsubishi Lancer.

Mitsubishi's Future in America Uncertain, New Small Models Coming as Larger Models Fade

While Mitsubishi works on making a new global small car, any development on the future of its "larger" cars has been put on hold. What does that mean for Mitsubishi Stateside? Well, it doesn't look good.

The small car would possibly be offered here in 2012 (it's said to have sub-1.5 liter 3-cylinder engine), but it's hard to believe a small efficient car (and the Lancer family) could be enough to justify keeping the brand here. There's light on the horizon, but more on that in a bit.

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X Transformed into a Coupe

Just because Mitsubishi doesn't offer a coupe variant of its Lancer EVO X sports car doesn't mean one cannot be created. Found on ebay thanks to a Carscoop tipster is this one-of-a-kind Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X that has been converted into a two-door model. As you can see in the photo gallery after the break, it's an unfinished project. According to the eBay seller of the custom build, "the previous owner [of the car] no longer wants to complete it".
