First Drive: New Peugeot 508 GT 2.2-liter HDi Sedan

It’s been a long time since Peugeot had a serious contender in the hotly contested sub-premium segment. The 407 was unloved and lacking in style; a “307 with a boot” purchased exclusively by the brand faithful. It was a bit bland and outdated compared to its major European competitor: the Mk 4 Ford Mondeo.

With the 508, Peugeot hopes to change all that. A carbon copy of the Peugeot 5 Concept that premiered at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the 2011 Peugeot 508 puts the verve – that oh-so-important French flair – back into Peugeot’s line-up.

We take the wheel of Peugeot’s flagship, AU$52,990 508 GT with a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel and a 6-speed automatic for a week-long road test and review.

IAA 2011: Peugeot 508 RXH is an Environmentally-Conscious Crossover

The crossover recipe introduced by Audi’s Allroad for those who fancy a bit of off-roading but find SUVs too flashy is quite simple: take a station-wagon model, and then add plastic body cladding and underside protection, rise the suspension height to increase road clearance and voilà: your new crossover model is ready.

The same recipe has been followed by many manufacturers, the most recent being Peugeot with its brand-new 508 RXH that was launched at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt.

Peugeot Details All-New 508 RXH Diesel-Electric Hybrid Crossover

The HX1 conceptual people-carrier may give us some ideas about Peugeot’s future, but at the present moment, the French brand's newest offering is the all-new 508 RXH, which is the third variant to be added to mid-size model's range after the sedan and the estate.

Although Peugeot had given us a first peek at the 508 RXH in July, the Frankfurt Motor Show will mark the crossover’s world premiere.

Based on the estate version of the 508, the RXH follows in the lines of the Audi Allroad and Volvo XC70 featuring a unique front end, flared wheel arches, and of course, higher-riding suspension along with 18-inch wheels and wider tracks.

SCOOP: Peugeot Trying Out New High-Riding 508 Outdoor

It has only been a few months since Peugeot spun out its newly designed 508 mid-size model in both saloon and Station Wagon formats, but the French acarmaker is already working on a new derivative inspired by its high-riding 207 Outdoor model.

Our spy photographers snagged a prototype version of the 508 Outdoor testing on European roads. Even though Peugeot’s full-body plastic wraps leave much to the imagination, it is obvious that the car rides on a jacked up suspension.

Now, we all know you can't and you shouldn't buy a car based upon looks or preliminary specs alone. It's the whole package that counts. However, in this case, we simply want to find out which one of these new family sedans captured your attention for the right reasons.

Place your vote in the poll after the jump and be sure to have your say in the comments section.

New Peugeot 508 Officially Unveiled, gets HYbrid4 Variant with 200HP and AWD

The all-new Peugeot 508 has been officially revealed following the leakout of the first photos earlier today. Available in sedan and station wagon body styles, the 508 replaces two cars in Peugeot's range, the 407 and 607. The French marque's Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat contender will make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in late September and go on sale early next year.

The 508 is the production version of the '5 by Peugeot' concept car seen in Geneva this past March, and according to Peugeot, it introduces the firm's new -and more subtle- design language as previewed on the SR1 Concept sports car. Expect to see the same type of grille finding its way on all future Peugeot models.

For the first time we get a look at the 508's interior, which according to the French carmaker, combines hi-tech features with the use of "high quality materials" both "visually and to the touch".

New Peugeot 508 Sedan and SW: First Official Photos

Say 'bonjour' to the all-new Peugeot 508, the first official pictures of which were leaked onto the web today. Designed to replace both the Opel Insignia-challenging 407 and the larger 607, the French automaker's new mid-size contender will have its first public outing at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September, and go on sale across Europe and other markets early next year.

Peugeot previewed the new 508 at this year's edition of the Geneva Salon with a concept sedan model, called the "5 by Peugeot". The production version has remained more or less true to the concept car

Along with the first photos of the sleek-looking sedan, we also have pictures of its load-loving station wagon brethren that will cater the needs of those looking for a more practical and possibly more spacious proposal in the mid-size segment.
