VÄTH Breaths New Life to Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 V8

Even though we have come to know Väth for its wild and powerful tunes of modern Mercedes-Benz models such as the 680hp G55 AMG and the 746hp C63 AMG Coupe Black Series Edition, the German company also prides itself for its restoration business.

To show us what it can do, Väth has revealed its latest restoration project in the guise of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. Codenamed W109, the full size limousine was a predecessor to the S-Class and was built from 1967 to 1972.

U Spy: 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Continues Testing in Spain

While vacationing in Spain, Carscoop reader Juan J. from Colombia, stumbled upon this camouflaged prototype model.

"Last week I was travelling from Barcelona to Valencia (Spain) and a white car covered up with black camo was cruising on the highway, which I'm pretty sure is the new S-Class," Juan tells us.

And he's right; this is the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class limousine with the standard wheelbase.

"I noticed two big "things" that might be relevant," Juan added. "All the dashboard was digital - I mean, speedometer, tachometer, and the main center screen, and also, the engine sounded like turbo."

While this test model retains the exhaust pipes of the regular model, it does sport a lowered chassis along with some other telling details such as the side skirts, larger alloy wheels shod in low profile tires, bigger brakes, a covered rear diffuser and a modified front bumper with more prominent air inlets.

SPY SHOTS: 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sheds More Camo, Reveals Interior

In less than a year's time, Mercedes-Benz will launch the sixth or ninth generation if you include the 1954 S W180 "Proton", the 1959 S W111 "Fintail" and the 1965 S W108, of its lauded S-Class model series.

Codenamed the W222, the 2014 model year S-Class is a hugely important vehicle for the German premium automaker, as after the demise of the poorly received and money losing Maybach brand, it will regain its place as the group's flagship limousine.

For this reason, Mercedes-Benz has made plans to expand the S-Class' range from three model to six models. These will likely include the normal and long wheelbase sedans, a coupe that will replace the current CL-Class, a super-luxurious and extra-long "Pullman" variant and possibly, two convertible versions with two and four-doors respectively.

Our spies nabbed a prototype of the regular S-Class sedan with less camouflage providing us a better look at the exterior, while also securing some new shots of the interior.

As you can see, there's no need to peel away all the disguise to see that the W222 will retain the current S-Class' familiar silhouette.

CFC-Sundern's Brassy Mercedes-Benz S65 V12 AMG Styling Package

With 612-horses and 1,000Nm (737 lb-ft) of peak torque on tap from its 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, the pre-facelift S65 AMG is no slouch by any means, which is why German tuning firm CFC-SUNDERN decided to leave the performance aspects of the Mercedes-Benz saloon untouched and focus on the styling.

Naturally, design is very subjective and what CFC-SUNDERN proposes may not be to everybody's tastes.

Carscoop reader Ken Helman was driving along the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey when he noticed a camouflaged prototype, and was quick enough to snap a few shots for us.

"Even though it is fully covered, I believe this is the new S class. This was seen on the Garden state parkway this evening following a current S Class," Ken told us.

Mercedes-Benz Outlines Future Plans, Says Next S-Class with Have Six Derivatives

After posting new records for vehicle sales, revenue and earnings in 2011 and with 2012 off to a good start as the company is expected to report its best sales ever in a first quarter, Mercedes-Benz has every reason to be optimistic about the future, despite some hiccups such as the axing of the Maybach brand.

During the opening ceremony of a new plant in Kecskemét, Hungary, Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, outlined the company’s 2020 growth strategy.

Zetsche said that the Mercedes-Benz cars division intends to conquer the number one position in the premium segment not only in terms of brand, products and profitability, but also of vehicle sales.

Overall, worldwide car sales are forecasted to increase from 60 million units in 2011 to 100 million units in 2020. According to Zetsche, Mercedes-Benz's medium-term target target is to lift sales from 1,279,100 in 2011, to more than 1.5 million vehicles in 2014 and more than 1.6 million in 2015.

Spy Shots: 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Flagship Begins its Strip Tease

These are some of the most revealing scoop pictures yet of the next iteration of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class limousine, codenamed W222.

Automakers tend to loosen up on the camouflage when a car's presentation is drawing closer and from what we've heard, the new S-Class will arrive in Merc's dealerships across the world during 2013.

If there's one thing that's obvious from these photos is the 2014 S-Class sedan's styling will be more evolutionary than revolutionary. Sure, there will be new details such as the headlamps and the swoopier rear-end design along with different line structures for the profile, but overall, the shape of the car will be reminiscent of the current model.

Auf Wiedersehen: Daimler to Pull the Plug on Maybach Brand

During the past decade or so, many carmakers have looked into their past to shape their future: the BMW Group's new Mini, the Fiat Group's 500 and the Volkswagen Group's Beetle are among the most well-known examples. But as Mercedes-Benz found out the hard way, not all second comings prove successful.

And now, only a decade after resuscitating Maybach, Daimler is ready to accept defeat and stop producing the $350,000 luxury limousine when the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class hits the market in 2013.

“It would not make sense to develop a successor model”, Daimler Dieter Zetsche said in an interview with German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “The coming S-Class is in such a way a superior vehicle that it can replace the Maybach.”

SPIED: Big Daddy 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Draws Closer

Once almost a lone player in the luxury segment, Mercedes-Benz and its S-Class have been challenged directly over the past years by numerous rivals ranging from the Lexus LS and the Audi A8 to the rejuvenated Jaguar XJ and even the Porsche Panamera.

But the Stuttgart-based automaker is holding on and is now readying a new and improved successor to its S-Class limousine that will also be known under its internal codename, W222.

Scheduled to arrive in the market in the 2013 calendar year, the W222 is based on a new platform architecture and will be offered in both short- and long-wheebase derivatives as well as with the choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

10 Luxury Cars of the Past You Can Afford to Buy Today

No matter what car you buy, its price will start depreciating from the moment you turn the ignition key and roll out of the showroom. Of course, not all models lose value at the same rate. But there are some cars that stand out more than others and Popular Mechanics has compiled a list with some of the most heavily depreciated vehicles in the luxury car segment.

Polk Reports BMW, Mercedes and Lexus Losing Large Luxury Sedan Market Share to Audi, Jaguar and Porsche

In the large luxury sedan stakes, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus have been the long-time leaders. Five years ago, each brand’s flagship model – the 7-Series, the S-Class and the LS – collectively owned 82% of the U.S. market and Merc’s offering could claim 30% of that.

Between June 2010 and May of this year, however, their collective market share has dwindled some 68% while that of three newer models have grown.

There’s the Audi A8, up 5% and the Jaguar XJ, up 12%. Both of these models could claim next to nothing of the market when they were launched but now look at them.
